BJC St. Peters Hospital - St. Peter's, MO

The community of St. Peters, Missouri is expected to see more than a 20% population increase in the next 10 years. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital wanted to capitalize on this growth by expanding their campus to conveniently accommodate their patients, minimize wait times and maximize care.

The current campus expansion is a 66,000 SF addition that includes an Inpatient Unit with 32 new private beds, an Inpatient Pharmacy, a Dialysis unit, MOB space and a Central Utility Plant. The third floor of the addition consists of shell space to accommodate an additional 32 beds in the future. A connection to the existing main lobby was also created along with public waiting areas on each of the floors.

The location of the new building is strategically selected to accommodate for future expansion on the north and west sides and to create the best internal flow with the existing second floor Inpatient Unit. The west end of the building incorporates a curved, three-story high façade with an articulated curtain wall and sun screen that provides filtered light to the waiting areas within. The stair tower is designed as a prominent landmark for the community with floor to ceiling glass at each level. The building features an articulated façade utilizing masonry, curtain wall, glass and cast stone materials. The exterior materials match the adjacent existing building and help to integrate the new building within the existing campus.

Family waiting areas and new, more spacious private rooms are now part of a core layout with open nurse stations and increased visibility to patient rooms. Overall, the interiors focus on patient care through clear circulation, a constant dialog with nature, sensitive and well-placed lighting, use of color, and environmentally sustainable materials. In addition, the canted walls allow for close proximity of the bathroom to the bed, better visibility of the window and better line of sight for staff from the corridor.

An exciting component of this project is the Integrated Project Delivery, a unique team structure and delivery method that incorporates the Owner, Trades Experts and Construction Management with the Architect/Engineering Design Team from beginning to end. This approach explores all project elements from the project onset which allows the Owner to make informed, timely decisions and eliminate duplicated efforts. The project remains on target since each member is integrated into the design process throughout. The end result includes reduction in overall cost, faster construction time, and lowered risk by reducing interfaces with existing systems. This cross-functional team integration during planning/programming resulted in unique so0lutions throughout the project.
