CREATIVE SOLUTION
The most complex problem associated with this project was the expansion of the Emergency Department.  Since there was no land available for complete replacement of the department as a whole, the team designed an expansion behind the existing ED that was large enough to contain the department’s present volume as a stand-alone entity.  Upon completion of the ED expansion, the existing area will be used as a fast track area. Security is a vital part of this facility and a lot of thought went into the correct image for the security officer as a visitor enters the ED. This project represents to the community not just a renewal of the hospital but also a rebirth of the downtown area. Our team worked closely with the local authorities to develop an image that would be appropriate for Blue Island. All of the new departments are accessed along a sweeping main corridor that starts at a two-story atrium. Starbucks coffee has been incorporated as a part of the main lobby. Another challenge faced by the team was to incorporate the religious origins of the hospital while not alienating other beliefs. Our Chicago style structure has large windows that have alternating glass colors to resemble stained glass, and although religious symbols are present on the exterior, they are incorporated into the overall design. This project is being completed as a joint venture with HDR Architecture.
