ASSIGNMENT
To align our new floors with those of the existing structure. The existing structure was built in 1980. It was decided at that time not to provide connecting ramps to the existing 1956 Bed Tower. The 1956 Bed Tower utilized thru wall air conditioning units that did not require ductwork. Our new areas that included surgical suites had to be designed to fit into an 11’-2” floor to floor height.
CREATIVE SOLUTION
Providing HVAC and other services in the typical way, from the center out, would create unacceptable ceiling heights in key areas. The team working together came up with the option of putting the ducts on the outside of the building. This was not a traditional way of delivering this service but we found the idea interesting. After a great deal of analysis, the team determined this was the best approach. We all embraced the idea and incorporated this concept into all aspects of the design. We made the shafts out of self-supporting precast concrete that accelerated erection time and reduced the interior space lost to columns. These mechanical buttresses became one of the most distinctive and attractive features of the project.
