CREATIVE SOLUTION
During master-planning the team determined that expanding the department in place would severely impact ongoing operations. Pratt Design Studio created a new state of the art department adjacent to the existing one. The vacated old unit was converted into an observation unit for ED overflow, chest-pain and 23 hour stays which freed critical bed space in the hospital for admitted patients. The existing at-grade helipad disrupted entry and traffic around the ED. After studying the problem the team decided to put the helipad up as high as possible to preserve the best flight paths while eliminating disruption. Pratt Design Studio worked with the FAA to determine the best possible angles of descent. We then designed two large trauma elevators to connect the helipad to surgery and the ED. Imaging services were moved within Radiology to be adjacent to ED. |
