CREATIVE SOLUTION
The new ICU was designed as a patient-centered environment, adjacent to the new OR surgery suite. The unit is connected to the Emergency Department and the helipad by two large Trauma elevators attached to the unit.
The existing column placement would have forced the design into unacceptable compromises. Pratt Design Studio created a long span structure that eliminated the columns. We then placed the ductwork in a rooftop chase integrated into the parapet. The ductwork was then able to run around the outside perimeter of the unit leaving the center duct and chase free.
Another aspect of the design is its extraordinary openness and light. The central staff core walls have extensive windows that allow visibility and light to penetrate deep into the unit. The windows in the central core also allow the staff to stay in visual contact throughout the unit.
