ASSIGNMENT To design and oversee construction of 32 new medical surgical patient beds on top of an existing Emergency Department.
SCOPE OF PROJECT June 2002 until June 2004 The project contains approximately 30,000 square feet of space. The program includes decentralized nursing stations, a central communication center, support spaces and family waiting. The project was constructed on top of a continuously operating Emergency Department and an existing Radiology Department.

CREATIVE SOLUTION We anticipated the possibility of the Bed Floor being added to the top of the Emergency Department, so elements that would cause the greatest disruption were installed in advance. Slab coring and plumbing runs were installed in pre-designed locations so that connections were made where possible above the Emergency Department.
The project is adjacent to four different structures of varying construction. Our goal was to unify the four buildings and create a consistent aesthetic. We created a sculptural pilaster that included artistic elements of the major expansion project and used it repeatedly on the façade of the bed floor expansion to visibly connect it to the rest of the campus and knit together the four structures.
