CREATIVE SOLUTION The location of the new building on the BJSP campus is strategically selected to allow for future expansion on the north and west sides and to create the best internal flow with the existing 2nd floor Inpatient Unit. The new building features an articulated facade utilizing masonry, curtain wall, glass, and cast stone materials. A custom pattern “unique identifier” is included in the exterior cast stone piers. The exterior materials match the adjacent existing building, thus “integrating” the new building within the site context. The west end incorporates a curved, three story high façade with an articulated curtain wall and sun screen that provides filtered light to the waiting areas within. The stair tower is designed as a prominent landmark “a light beacon to the community” with floor to ceiling glass at each level. South facing patient room windows have sun shades. This cross-functional team integration during planning/programming resulted in a unique patient room that offers a “direct” relationship to nature with direct views to the exterior; focused patient care via family and staff zones allocated within the patient room. The patient unit has an innovative core layout with open nurse stations and increased visibility to the patient rooms. Overall, the interiors focus on patient care through clear circulation, a constant dialog with nature, sensitive and well placed lighting, use of color and environmentally sustainable materials. |
